Threads Account Deletion Feature Coming in December, Promises Meta

Instagram's Threads has experienced unprecedented growth since its launch.

Meta Platforms seized the opportunity to introduce its microblogging platform, and it quickly became the fastest platform to reach 100 million users, achieving this milestone in just 5 days.

While users have embraced this new social media platform, one persistent issue has troubled them—the inability to delete Threads accounts without losing their Instagram accounts.

To address this concern, Meta has pledged to introduce a new feature in December, ensuring users can manage their Threads accounts without leaving the app.

Threads Account Deletion Feature

Meta's Chief Privacy Officer for Product, Michel Protti, has confirmed that they are actively working on the Threads account deletion feature, slated for release in December.

Recognizing the frustration caused by the intertwined nature of Threads and Instagram accounts, Protti explained that enabling account deletion without affecting the entire Instagram account was a significant technical challenge.

However, Meta has overcome this obstacle. Protti stated, "Technically, it was extremely challenging to allow deletion of a separate Threads account without also deleting your overall Instagram account out of the gate.

So we paid particular attention to ensuring the user could still exercise their deletion rights, by deactivating the account to sort of hide all content, setting it to private, or deleting individual threads."

Currently, users seeking to delete their Threads accounts can only set their accounts to private as a temporary workaround. However, this issue will be fully resolved when the feature arrives in December.

While the Meta app gained massive popularity upon its July launch, with 100 million users in a matter of days, sustained user engagement has posed challenges.

To retain users, Threads has introduced various features, and with the upcoming account deletion feature, Meta aims to keep users engaged with the app.
