Apple M2 MacBook Air Review 2023

The New M2 MacBook Air: A Game-Changer for Apple Lovers

After 14 years of evolution, Apple has unveiled the new M2 MacBook Air, marking a significant departure from the iconic wedge shape.

The new design boasts uniform thickness, delivering a more substantial, modern look.

At a starting price of $1,200, this M2 Air offers an impressive array of features: exceptional battery life, a spacious 13.6-inch display, a highly acclaimed keyboard, and robust performance for daily tasks.

What's New?

While the design change might not seem significant to the average user, tech enthusiasts will notice the departure from the tapered bottom half that previous MacBook Air models featured.

This transformation holds weight, as the MacBook Air is a popular choice for millions and a benchmark for thin and light laptops.

This new model introduces Apple's latest in-house processor, the M2, albeit at a higher starting price compared to its predecessor.

However, the prior M1 model will still be available for those seeking a sub-$1,000 option.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Sleek, symmetrical design

  • Improved 13.6-inch screen

  • Enhanced webcam

  • Impressive battery life

  • Excellent everyday performance

  • Convenient MagSafe charging

Cons:

  • Higher price tag

  • Thermal throttling under heavy workloads

  • Base model has slower storage

  • Display notch obstructs menu bar apps

  • Fingerprint-prone Midnight color

  • Limited port options

Design and Feel

The M2 MacBook Air adopts a squared-off, symmetrical design that's both bold and sleek. At just over 11 millimeters thick, it's noticeably thin and lightweight, making it a breeze to carry around.

However, the new Midnight color, while stunning, tends to accumulate unsightly fingerprints.

One standout addition is the MagSafe charging port, supplementing the existing Thunderbolt / USB-C ports. This practical enhancement allows you to charge the laptop while keeping your Thunderbolt / USB-C ports accessible.

Keyboard Heaven

For users who endured Apple's older butterfly keyboards, the M2 MacBook Air's keyboard is a breath of fresh air. Key presses feel substantial without excessive noise, offering a tactile typing experience.

The Touch ID key in the upper right corner provides seamless and secure logins.

Display Matters

The new MacBook Air sports a maximum brightness of 500 nits, a 25% improvement over its predecessor. This display excels in everyday tasks and provides sharp visuals with its 2560x1664 resolution.

However, it's worth noting that the refresh rate remains at 60Hz, which may disappoint users looking for a higher rate, especially at this price point.

Performance and Ports

The M2 processor ensures snappy performance, making this MacBook Air a fast and efficient machine. Benchmarking scores rival or surpass the pricier 2021 MacBook Pro in some areas.

The introduction of the MagSafe port offers added convenience, allowing you to use both Thunderbolt-capable ports for accessories.

Notch and Branding

A notch in the display, similar to the MacBook Pro models, is a new addition to the MacBook Air. While it's a design choice, it may cause usability issues for some users.

The Apple logo on the lid is now 30% larger, but interestingly, the laptop lacks the "MacBook Air" branding anywhere on its surface.

The Verdict

The new M2 MacBook Air represents a remarkable evolution of the iconic laptop line. If you're still using an older MacBook Air or one with the butterfly keyboard, this upgrade is a clear choice.

However, the 2020 M1 MacBook Air, starting at $1,000, remains a compelling option with slightly different design elements. Until Apple introduces a higher refresh rate, the M1 model retains its appeal for many users.

In conclusion, the M2 MacBook Air is an excellent choice for those seeking top-notch performance, a fantastic keyboard, and Apple's signature design, even if it comes at a premium price point.
