The new Apple iPhone XS and XS Max support the relatively new eSIM technology that also appears in recent iPad, Apple Watch and Google Pixel 2 releases.

When traveling with a traditional SIM card, you may have to swap to another carrier’s SIM card to keep your coverage. If you want to change carriers at home, you’ll also have to physically replace your SIM card. With that in mind, does a built-in SIM mean you have to switch phones?

Thankfully, no. In fact, one of the advantages of eSIM technology is that it makes it much easier to switch carriers. Instead of having to order a new SIM and wait around for it to arrive.

You might have heard of something called an eSIM recently, and wonder how it’s different to the normal SIM cards we use in our devices.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new SIM technology that’s designed to make it easier to switch network, or switch between personal and business numbers.

1. You’ll be able to change carriers without having to get a new SIM. You can change carriers or your plan in your phone settings. This means less time speaking with carriers, and ordering and waiting for new SIMs. Software does everything.

3. With eSIMs and dual SIMS, you can have two plans from two different carriers.

This means you can:

Use one number for business and another number for personal calls. Add a local data plan when you travel outside of the country or region. Have separate voice, text and data plans.

Slowly but surely, eSIMs will take over. If your carrier supports it, and your phone supports it, then that may be all you need to start using the new technology today. To help bridge the gap, some phones with eSIMs still have traditional SIM card slots, but eventually, those trays could go away altogether.
